Expert table positions in poker

Poker is just as much a strategical battle as it is a game of chance. When playing the game offensively, utilizing your table position to help control the ebb and flow of your decisions is an often overlooked key factor to a winning strategy and upping the count of your casino chips.

There are 3 different major points at a regulation Poker table consisting of 10 players. The 3 sections, when broken down are known as early, middle and late. Each position has a strong and a weak point attached to it. It’s in knowing the strengths and weaknesses of where you fall at the table that will greatly improve your odds during that hand no matter what cards you’re dealt.

The first section consists of the first four players at the table. Obviously if there are open seats at your specific table, you would adjust this number accordingly. The “early” position is made up of the two blinds, and then the next two players to their immediate left. This position requires you to step it up a few notches and play stronger hands, as both the middle and late positions will be taking their cues from your lead. Expert players tend to consider an early position undesirable, but it’s all up to what you make out of it and if you play your cards right so to speak, you should find yourself withstanding a raise of a few clay chips as each player takes their turn.

Section two, or the “middle” section, is made up of the next three players to the left of the early section. This position gives you the advantage of watching and analyzing the play of the earlier players, also keeping in mind that the late position players are studying your moves as well. It is easy from this stand point to end up caught in between the plays of the first and last players. It gives you a better option of playing a safe route and instead of offering up those coveted clay chips, opting to check when it comes your turn.

Last but not least, is the final section at the table. The late position is made up of the three remaining players. The people in these three seats are generally considered to have the best advantage at the table to keeping hold of their Texas holdem poker chips. Especially the player on the button, or absolute last player at the table. Your odds for bluffing in one of these last three spots is ideal. You are able to sit by and watch every other play made before being forced to make your own. This gives you the opportunity to exploit your seat position for all it’s worth.

You can make a simple bluff by throwing in a poker chip or two. Or, you could have a winning hand at your finger tips but choose to not raise allowing others to feel safer in throwing down a couple extra bucks. The possibilities from this seat are endless. And again depend only on what you make the position out to be.

Wherever you fall at the table, there are both pros and cons to all. What determines and expert player from a novice one, is how well you can adapt to your situation. This means using all of your senses, looking for tells, studying each players move and most importantly, keeping your cool under the extreme pressure of it all and in doing so watching your World Poker Tour chip set grow to completion.
